Tool Ideation and Development in the Digitalization and Tools Competence Center (DTCC)

MEI continues its commitment to achieving the SDGs by 2030, by empowering local communities, entrepreneurs, specialists and public sector actors with tools (for measuring, monitoring, evaluating energy access and energy wellbeing, for conducting system design and technology innovation). For this, the Digitalization and Tools Competence Center will build up digital skills through extensive research and content development in the area of digital solutions for climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency and finance inclusion.

Tool ideation and development is the process of envisioning and defining software-based solutions to address one or more sets of problems by taking into account of a set of primitive components and constraints. The key to tool building lies behind activities which should include capturing clear goals, conceptualizing by developing a clear design vision, framing the content, implementing the approach by constantly analyzing and iterating the process according to the user needs.

Schematic of Tool Development

A renewed approach to tool development was realized, which aimed at giving opportunities to highly enthusiastic and motivated budding professionals in the team, through advanced excel and VBA-based programming. The experience gained by building specific tools for the validation and sizing of solar pumps, the portfolio assessment for financial institutions considering climate change and natural hazards, the estimation of rural electrification demand, and the financial feasibility of associated electrification technologies; for Indonesia, Grenada, Nigeria and Tunisia contributed to achieving tremendous knowledge and growth within the team.
